Unfortunately, there's not simple formula to identifying all of the factors of a number and it can be a tedious process when trying to identify the factors of larger numbers. To find the factors of the number 144, it is easiest to start from the outside in. Here's what we mean:
We start by creating a table and writing 1 on the left side and then the number we're trying to find the factors for on the right side in a table.

Next, we take the number 144 and divide it by 2.
In this case, 144 ÷ 2 = 72
If the quotient is a whole number, then 2 and 72 are factors. Write them in the table below. If the quotient is not a whole number, skip to the next test.

Now, we try dividing 144 by 3.
144 ÷ 3 = 48

We keep dividing by the next largest number, in this case the number 5. If the quotient of 144 ÷ 5 is a whole number, then 5 and your quotient are factors of the number.
